Well, Izzy, there are different ideas about why gas is so expensive, but it mostly comes down to what we call supply and demand.
The supply is how much gas the oil companies are making, and the demand is how much people want to buy. When supply goes down or demand goes up, prices go up. Right now, the oil companies are making less--I've read that sometimes they do that on purpose to make the price go up!
The other problem is that now that so many countries are opening up factories, EVERYONE needs more gas and oil (to run the machines) than they needed before. So now the oil companies have a lot more customers in a lot more countries!
Right now, cars use a lot of gas to get where they're going. A gallon of gas will only get them 15 miles. Or at most 30. But every year there are more and more "hybrid" cars that use electricity as well as gas, and they can go 50 or more miles for every gallon.
In ten or twenty years, when everybody is driving hybrids, the world may be using less gas, and the prices may go down.
